Liver in dogs

When the liver is in trouble, cutting carbohydrate is the wrong move.

Signs to look for

Why it happens

The liver is a silent organ — 60% of it has to be compromised before a signal appears.

Counterintuitively, carbohydrate must not be cut in liver disease. Short of an energy source, the body breaks down protein instead, and the burden on the liver grows.

Some breeds, such as the Bedlington Terrier, have a genetic problem with copper accumulating in the liver.

Signs that mean go to the vet

Jaundice — yellowing of the gums or the whites of the eyes — means see a vet immediately
