Liver in cats

When the liver is in trouble, cutting carbohydrate is the wrong move.

Signs to look for

Why it happens

The liver is a silent organ — 60% of it has to be compromised before a signal appears.

Counterintuitively, carbohydrate must not be cut in liver disease. Short of an energy source, the body breaks down protein instead, and the burden on the liver grows.

When an obese cat suddenly stops eating, hepatic lipidosis follows. Three days is enough to make it an emergency.

Some breeds, such as the Bedlington Terrier, have a genetic problem with copper accumulating in the liver.

Signs that mean go to the vet

A cat that has not eaten for 2–3 days needs a vet without delay. Hepatic lipidosis moves fast
